Fast-growing larch in Estonia

30-year old Larix x eurolepis in Söe arboreetum

Estonian Forest Research Institute ordered a small amount of Larix  x eurolepis F1 seeds stemmed from Danish Royal Farefolden seedbase, sent by a seed bank in Canada. At present 6 trees (arboretum subcompartment No 24) from the seedlot grow in Söe Arboretum. The trees were measured in 1996, 2001 and 2006. The heights are measured by “Vertex”, tree mass is calculated on the basis of Ozolin formula.

Up to the date available to us no conifers at the age of 30 grown in Estonia have reached such dimensions. Our native conifers Norway spruce and Scots pine do not grow so fast.
